What is NOC Engineer?

Network Operation Center Engineer or a NOC engineer means they are an expert in the management and monitoring of a network from any centralized location. A technical NOC team is comprised of skilled IT & NOC engineers. They watch the IT environment and ensure that the uptime and connectivity of the IT systems are seamless 24/7.

Large network service providers are associated with network operation centers, which feature a visual representation of the networks being monitored and workstations where detailed network statuses are monitored. Software is employed to help manage the networks. Telecommunications, television broadcasts, and computer networks are controlled through network operations centers.

The NOC team and the help desk are different, and the terms are not interchangeable. The help desk deals directly with the clients and handles the questions on the front-line. The MSP’s or Managed Service Providers contact the NOC team when they are experiencing issues or difficulties regarding the networks. Then, through this communication, the issues are quickly fixed by the NOC team, and the uptime of the client is ensured. Network operations center (NOC) engineers are in charge of providing engineering support for network connectivity issues, as well as working as a liaison for carriers and other information technology (IT) technicians in their organization. They are responsible for solving and preventing data outages with wired and wireless system connection hardware. In addition, they communicate with the help desk, and other on-site system professionals to provide issue resolution in a prompt manner. 

The NOC is staffed 24/7 and systems are constantly monitored for problems. The Enterprise Monitoring (Netcool) and Enterprise Backup (NetBackup) services are provided via this facility. The NOC hosts the Center for Research Computing's (formerly Center for Simulation and Modeling's) high-performance computing cluster. This helps to facilitate computational-based research across the University, as well as several departmental high-performance computing clusters. NOC engineers provide support for the research network and server infrastructure A NOC technician uses sophisticated network monitoring tools on a series of computer monitors to monitor for performance, network system device operations, power failures, and more. If the NOC’s network monitoring system detects any problems that may threaten efficient IT services operations, the on-call technician will automatically receive a notification. From there, the NOC technician will create a support ticket and then work on resolving the issue immediately or escalate it to the proper technician before it disrupts the client’s service.
